Light a Candle
Honor the memory of those whose burial anniversaries fall this week in Moroccan Jewish cemeteries with a virtual candle.

Remembering Anniversaries This Week
The light of memory keeps our ancestors' legacies alive across generations
The Hiloula Tradition
In Moroccan Jewish tradition, lighting a candle on the anniversary of a person's death is a significant custom known as the Hiloula or Yahrzeit (the Yiddish term more commonly used among Ashkenazi Jews).
The flame symbolizes the soul of the departed, based on the biblical verse from Proverbs 20:27, "The soul of man is the candle of God."
The memorial candle is typically placed in the home or synagogue.
Family members may gather for a meal where they share stories and memories of the deceased.
Many Moroccan Jews recite special prayers, including Psalms and the Kaddish prayer.
Some families distribute food or charity in memory of the departed.
For particularly revered figures, especially rabbis and community leaders, the Hiloula may evolve into a larger celebration involving pilgrimages to the grave site, communal meals, and extensive prayers.
Our Digital Memorial Initiative
The Yahasra.org project has taken a significant step in honoring Moroccan Jewish heritage by implementing a virtual candle-lighting feature that automatically commemorates each person recorded in their cemetery databases on the anniversary of their burial date.
This thoughtful digital adaptation of the traditional Hiloula custom allows families and community members worldwide to participate in this meaningful remembrance practice regardless of physical location.
The platform displays these virtual memorials alongside key information about the deceased, including their name, burial date, years passed, Hebrew date, and cemetery location. This initiative not only preserves cultural practices but also creates a digital space for collective memory and continued connection with ancestors across the Moroccan Jewish diaspora in Israel, France, Canada, and beyond.

Traditional Memorial Prayer
"May God remember the soul of our beloved who has gone to eternal rest. In loving testimony to his/her life I pledge charity and deeds of loving-kindness to help perpetuate the values, the dignity, and the memory of his/her life. May his/her soul be bound up in the bond of life eternal. I pray that these moments of meditation and the deeds I do help to lift his/her soul ever higher. Amen."
